I have been privileged to have served Rochester for the past twelve years in the Minnesota House of Representatives and look forward to another term.
From 2013-14, when DFLers held a majority in both the State House of Representatives and the State Senate, the state had two of the most productive legislative sessions in recent memory. Together, we balanced the budget honestly, we set aside money for the state’s rainy day fund, and we increased property tax refunds for many homeowners and renters. Together, we restored and improved funding for our public schools, and we funded all-day kindergarten throughout our state. We also raised the minimum wage, and gave same-sex couples the freedom to marry. These policies and smart investments - along with the improving economy - ended years of deficits and gave us a budget surplus.
For the past two years, Republicans have been in control of the Minnesota House, and the outcomes have been very different. Both the 2015 and 2016 sessions ended in chaos, when the Republican House speaker blocked passage of productive, bi-partisan legislation and used last-minute tricks to attempt to ram through bills that most members were not allowed to read. These attempts to run our state using backroom deals are unacceptable to Minnesotans and should be unacceptable to every legislator - regardless of party. If legislators would simply refuse to vote on bills they have not been given the chance to read and don't fully understand, leaders would not be able to use this tactic to pass their pet projects and policies.
This session I served as minority lead for health care on the House's Health and Human Services Finance Committee. Health and human services is a critically important and complex area of policy, for all of us as individuals and for our community. I look forward to continuing to use the knowledge and expertise I have gained to help Rochester residents and all Minnesotans get the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford.
